FACULTY OF JAPANESE STUDIES

Tashkent State Institute of Oriental Studies established by the Cabinet of Ministers resolution № 186 from July 15, 1991. Then in 1992, the department of Japanese Philology was established in the Faculty of Oriental Studies of the Institute for the first time in Uzbekistan. It has become an important event in the history of Japanese studies not only in Uzbekistan, but in the whole of Central Asia. The department is the first educational institution to teach Japanese language.

At present Tashkent State Institute of Oriental Studies has 6 faculties: Oriental Philology, Economics and Regional Studies of Foreign Countries, History and Philosophy of Foreign Countries, Chinese Studies, Korean Studies and Japanese Studies, with 27 departments. Among them is the chair of Japanese faculty take a special place. In recent years, the Faculty of Japanese Philology has become a center of learning Japanese and Japanese studies in general.663

Most of the teaching staff of theFaculty of Japanese Studiesare graduates of the Japanese Philology Department. Young and qualified teachers working in the department are very dedicated to their profession. In addition to these teachers, Japanese expert Sugano Reyko, who has been contributing to the professional and quality training of students since the first day of the department, has been in constant search. His contribution to the development of Japanese studies in Uzbekistan was highlighted in 2014 and was awarded the Do’stlik (Friendship) Order by the First President of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Sugano Reyko’s collaboration with the teachers of the Japanese department “ Japanese language textbook 1-2” published in 2010, and the 2015 “Japanese language textbook 3”, are now used by teachers and students of the faculty.

The library of the faculty was opened in 1996 on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of independence of Uzbekistan. In the same year, with the assistance of the Japanese International Fund and the Japanese Embassy, more than 3,000 books and more than 30 textbooks from the University of Hosei were donated to the library. From 1997 to 2020, the Embassy of Japan, Japanese Literature Publishing and Promotion Center (JLPP Foundation), TOSHIBA Foundation, Japan Foundation, BONJINSHA Foundation, Hosei University, and many Japanese professors and teachers gave More than 14400 textbooks and books, over 800 cassettes and disks, 800 pieces of fiction and translations, compiled encyclopedias, and more than 200 magazines in various content. The library of the faculty is regularly used by students of the Oriental Studies Institute.

For the past 25 years, one of the faculty’s unique traditions, the contest “Speaking in Japanese”, is being held. This competition is of great interest among the students, and there are many students who wish to participate. So far, four of the students who have won this competition have been honored 1st place in the CIS (Commonwealth Independent States) Competition in Moscow, Russia, and 7 of our students have won 1st place in the Central Asian Competition. With this option, students will be able to find out the extent of their knowledge of Japanese.

International relations of the faculty.

The faculty’s international relations have rich history and have established close cooperation with most prestigious universities in Japan. To date, Tashkent State Institute of Oriental Studies has signed Memorandums of Cooperation with Tokyo University of Foreign Languages, Tokyo University, Tsukuba University, Hosey University, Waseda University, Sofia University, Aichi University, and Fukushima Gakuin University. To date, more than 1000 students of the Institute have been trained in long-term and short-term undergraduate programs, while another 100 undergraduate students are studying in these universities. Certainly, these programs will allow students to grow their worldview and learn more about Japanese, the culture and traditions of the Japanese people. In addition, it strengthens the friendship between the states and stimulates the development of scientific research. Students will be selected to participate in refresher courses in Japan. The winning students will be sent to study for a variety of terms based on proposals from universities affiliated with the department and will be taught by leading professors of the same university as Japanese language teaching, topical issues of linguistics, Japanese culture and more. At the same time, each year, about 10 students from the above-mentioned Japanese universities participate in one-year Oriental Studies programs for international students. According to the program, Japanese students will be able to learn Uzbek and Russian languages and get acquainted with the history, culture, arts and traditions of Uzbekistan.
